Falls Thief

A multi-part sculpture placed along several walls of the Administration building. One wall includes cast bronze and painted aluminum shapes, including a propellor on a pole (giving the illusion of slicing through the building); a triangular grid pattern painted royal blue; another grid pattern painted blue, and a fourth boat-shaped piece of aluminum painted yellow. A cast bronze rope threads through the first three pieces. The fifth piece attaches to the main body of the Administration building and is composed of six 'rays' of aluminum, painted blue. -- Smithsonian National Inventory

A Native-American woman stands carrying a swathed papoose in a craddleboard on her back, her hands crossed before her holding a walking stick. She has black hair (perhaps made of horsehair) and wears traditional dress, including a real beaded headband, white dress with maroon trim, and moccasins with a criss-cross rope band on the tops. The baby is attached by metal hooks and is made of burlap and rope with fiberglass coating and paint (with metal underneath). The craddleboard is golden-brown with Native-American designs of black, white, and yellow on the sides. The baby's blanket is painted cream. The sculpture is mounted upon a rectangular base. -- Smithsonian National Inventory

Full-length cast bronze figure of a Chippewa brave standing barechested, his hair in two braids falling over the front of his shoulders. He wears breeches with an ankle-length shawl draped around his waist and over his proper left shoulder and arm. His proper left arm is bent at the waist with a peace pipe crooked, his proper right arm bent and the hand open and extended. Chief Mon-Si-Moh stands holding an axe in his proper left hand. He wears a headband, with a plume rising from the top of his head and two black and white feathers coming up in an extended V behind his head. He wears a red, knee-length coat, with a white collar and a cross on it. Over his coat the chief wears two bands of material in a red X shape, decorated with a yellow and green floral design. His tan mocassins also have a yellow and green floral decoration. The sculpture is mounted on a tapered rectangular base. -- Smithsonian National Inventory. Inscription: (Wood plaque on front of base:) AT THE OLD CROSSING TREATY OF 1863/PROVISION WAS MADE FOR 640 ACRES OF LAND/NEAR THE MOUTH OF THIEF RIVER TO BE GIVEN/TO THE CHIEF OF THE RED LAKE BAND OF THE/CHIPPEWA INDIANS./THE CHIEF'S SECTION, ON WHICH A BIG PART OF/THIEF RIVER FALLS IS LOCATED WAS INHERITED BY/CHIEF MON-SI-MOH (ALSO KNOWN AS CHIEF RED ROBE)./IN 1879 FOLLOWING A GOVERNMENT SURVEY, MON-SI-MOH/DECIDED THE LAND WAS TOO VALUABLE TO LIE IDLE AND/FOR SEVERAL YEARS DEALT WITH LUMBERMEN LEASING/LAND TO THEM. IN 1895 THE FIRST SALE WAS MADE/FROM THE CHIEF'S SECTION. BY 1901 HE HAD SOLD/THE LAST OF HIS HOLDINGS. unsigned.
